A coalition of Christian communities in Kwara State has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to field a Kwara Christian candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The group, known as the Conglomerate of Kwara State Christian Communities, made the appeal on Monday in Ilorin.
According to Daily Post, the coalition also called on President Bola Tinubu to support the emergence of a Kwara Christian candidate during the APC governorship primary.
The group said its request was based on fairness, equity and inclusion. It stressed that the appeal was not driven by religious politics.
The coalition argued that every qualified politician deserves an equal opportunity to contest for the state’s highest office. It added that competence should remain the main factor in choosing a candidate.
According to Daily Post, the group noted that the last Christian governor in Kwara served during the administration of Theophilus Bamigboye. It also said Christians and Muslims have enjoyed peaceful coexistence in the state for many years.
The convener of the coalition, Rev. Felix Ajide, cited findings from the Africa Polling Institute. He said many residents would support a competent candidate regardless of religion.
Ajide also stated that the APC has experienced Christian politicians who can govern the state effectively. He mentioned Engr. Femi Sanni and Dr. Toyin Alabi as examples.
The coalition urged President Tinubu to consider the appeal when discussions on the party’s governorship ticket begin.
According to Daily Post, the group reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and democratic values. It added that presenting a Kwara Christian candidate would promote unity and strengthen the sense of belonging among all residents.
