Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed doubts about whether the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will conduct the 2027 general election fairly.
Atiku raised the concern while speaking about the preparations for the 2027 presidential election. According to Daily Post, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate questioned the commission’s ability to guarantee a credible electoral process.
The former vice president said Nigerians must remain concerned about the conduct of the next election. He stressed that the credibility of the process would depend heavily on INEC’s actions before, during and after voting.
Atiku’s comments come as political parties intensify their preparations for the 2027 elections. INEC has already published the particulars of presidential candidates, while political campaigns have officially commenced.
The ADC candidate has repeatedly raised concerns about the electoral process. He has also demanded greater transparency from INEC on issues that could affect public confidence in the election.
Atiku said the commission must convince Nigerians that it can remain independent. He argued that electoral institutions must operate without political interference.
He also pointed to concerns surrounding the security of voter information. The former vice president had previously demanded answers from INEC over the alleged exposure of information from its voter registration database.
For Atiku, such incidents can weaken confidence in the electoral system. He maintained that Nigerians deserve clear explanations whenever questions arise about the security of electoral information.
The former vice president further warned that public trust is essential to the success of any election. He said citizens must believe that their votes will be protected and accurately counted.
Meanwhile, INEC has continued preparations for the 2027 general election. The commission has released the list of presidential candidates and their running mates ahead of the poll.
The electoral body has also fixed January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections. Governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
The 2027 presidential race is expected to be closely contested. President Bola Tinubu is seeking another term under the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Atiku is challenging him on the ADC platform.
Other opposition figures are also preparing for the election. This has increased political activity across the country as parties work to strengthen their structures ahead of the campaign. Atiku’s latest remarks therefore add to the growing debate over the credibility of the 2027 election.
The former vice president has urged INEC to demonstrate its independence through its actions. He also wants the commission to address concerns before Nigerians head to the polls. With the election still months away, the credibility of the electoral process is already becoming a major political issue.
For Atiku and other opposition figures, INEC will have to do more than simply promise a free and fair election. The commission must also take practical steps that convince Nigerians that every vote will count.
