Donald Trump asks US lawmakers to pass a law that sends people who steal government welfare money straight to prison with no options for probation.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has issued a very strong warning to anyone stealing money meant to help everyday citizens.
Trump said that anyone caught cheating government welfare programs will go straight to prison and will no longer be allowed to pay fines or get off lightly through probation.
Trump made this big announcement on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during a video message recorded inside his Oval Office at the White House.
In the video, Trump asked the lawmakers in the United States Congress to make strict new laws. These new laws will target criminals who steal money meant for three main government help programs: Medicare, which gives medical care to older adults; Medicaid, which helps poor families and sick children get doctors; and Social Security, which gives monthly money to retired older citizens.
Explaining why he wants these changes, Trump said that it is wrong for criminals to take away money meant for vulnerable people who really need it.
Under his new plan, any person who steals from these government funds will automatically spend time behind bars. Judges will no longer be allowed to give those thieves probation instead of jail.
Speaking directly to the public in his video address, Trump gave a clear message: “Today I’m calling on Congress to pass legislation to address fraud in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security Programs. Under our proposal, probation is no longer an option for the fraudsters. If you steal from the American people, you will go to prison for a long period of time. And the more you steal, the longer you’ll stay in that prison.”
The President also warned that people who get caught doing this crime a second time will face twice as much punishment. He stated clearly that repeat offenders will have their time in jail doubled.
Trump emphasized this rule during his speech, stating: “Not only that, but if you’re a convicted fraudster who gets caught stealing from the American people a second time, your sentence will be doubled.”
Trump did not stop with the criminals alone; he also warned government leaders and local politicians. He said that any leader or politician who knows that people are stealing taxpayer money under their watch, has the power to stop it, but decides to close their eyes and do nothing, will be made to pay back all the stolen money out of their own personal pockets.
Warning these politicians directly, Trump stated: “Under our proposal, if a state or local politician knows about fraud and can stop it, but does nothing about it, they can be personally liable for the full loss of the American taxpayers’ money that they should have stopped, and they should have saved.”
This proposal is part of a larger plan by the government to clean up federal support agencies. The United States Office of Personnel Management recently reported that advanced data checks helped save and recover over $500 million in fake benefit claims.
Before these changes can become the official law of the land, the United States Congress must first discuss and vote to pass the bill.
Trump finished his video message by warning anyone planning to steal from taxpayers that the government is actively hunting for them: “So from now on, fraudsters, we’re watching you.”
