Former German spy chief August Hanning has been arrested for allegedly buying secret government data to resell to foreign clients.
Police in Germany have arrested August Hanning, the former head of the country’s main foreign intelligence agency known as the Bundesnachrichtendienst or BND.
Law enforcement officers picked up the former top spy boss on Tuesday morning, October 6, 2026, right at his private residence in Nordwalde, a small town located near Münster in western Germany.
Investigators from the office of the Federal Prosecutor General ordered the arrest as part of a major investigation into illegal state secrets, espionage, and attempted high treason.
The sudden arrest sent shockwaves through Germany because August Hanning used to be one of the most powerful security officials in the whole country.
He served as the head of the foreign intelligence agency between 1998 and 2005 before taking up top security advisory roles in government and private business.
Officers also arrested a former senior staff member who used to work closely with Hanning during his time as the agency director.
The reason behind the police action is that government prosecutors suspect Hanning was illegally buying highly secret official information so he could resell the data to outside buyers and foreign entities.
Reports indicate that after leaving his official government job, Hanning worked around the globe as a private consultant for international security and business firms.
Investigators believe he used his strong connections with former staff to secretly buy protected government documents.
Explaining the seriousness of the charges, German media outlets reported that “Hanning bought classified information from an employee of the BND’s executive staff who had recently retired to resell it”.
Reports further highlighted that the ongoing investigation involves heavy accusations of “the illegal acquisition of information to the detriment of the state, obtaining state secrets, attempted high treason, and intelligence activities on behalf of foreign intelligence services”.
This case could easily turn out to be one of the biggest political spy scandals in modern German history. Analysts noted that Hanning had been facing major financial pressures in recent times following the failure of a foreign bank where he served on the governing board.
Legal experts noted that if the court finds the former spy chief guilty of high treason and selling government secrets, he could spend many years behind bars. German government prosecutors have stated that they will continue searching properties and gathering evidence as the court case moves forward.
