Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday morning for surgery to remove a small lump from his lung.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, is entering the hospital on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to undergo a surgical operation to remove a small growth or lump discovered inside his lung.
The Vatican confirmed the medical update on Monday, revealing that the 71 year old pontiff will be admitted to the famous Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome, Italy, during the late morning.
This medical procedure marks the first time Pope Leo XIV is being admitted to a hospital since he was elected to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholic faithful in May 2025.
The head of the Catholic Church made the surprising announcement himself during his weekly Angelus prayer address to thousands of worshippers gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.
He explained that during routine health checks, doctors discovered a small, well defined lump, known as a pulmonary nodule, in its very early stages.
Medical experts explain that while many lung nodules are harmless and non cancerous, doctors usually recommend removing them early to prevent future complications or rule out early stage illnesses.
Explaining to the crowd of faithful believers why he agreed to undergo the surgery, Pope Leo XIV shared the direct medical advice given to him by his personal physicians.
Addressing the public in St. Peter’s Square regarding his decision to go under the knife, Pope Leo XIV stated: “The doctors believe it would be right to intervene and so, following their advice, I have decided to have the operation to remove it.”
Providing further details regarding the exact time the Pope will enter the medical facility, official Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed the arrangements to newsmen in Rome.
Updating international journalists on the pontiff’s schedule and admission time, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated: “Tuesday, late morning.”

Vatican officials revealed that the Pope is expected to spend about one week recovering inside the special medical suite at Gemelli Hospital, which has historically treated Catholic popes during medical emergencies.
The hospital apartment set aside for the pontiff includes a private bedroom, a conference room for medical personnel, a kitchen, rest areas, and a small private chapel where he can pray while recovering from the surgery.
Medical specialists monitoring the situation at Gemelli Hospital reassured the public that the surgical procedure, known as a thoracoscopy, is a standard, routine operation carrying minimal risks for a person in good physical condition.
To ensure he recovers fully, Pope Leo XIV has temporarily adjusted his busy schedule and asked Vatican offices to hold all major administrative summaries until he is discharged.
Millions of Catholic faithful and religious leaders across the globe have offered special prayers for the successful operation and quick recovery of the Holy Father.
