Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government to guarantee Peter Obi safety, insisting that nothing must happen to the Labour Party leader as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather pace.
According to Daily Post, Atiku made the appeal while reacting to recent political developments. He stressed that every opposition figure deserves equal protection under the law. He also argued that democracy can only thrive when politicians are free to campaign without fear, intimidation or violence.
Speaking on Peter Obi safety, Atiku said the issue should never become a matter of political rivalry. Instead, he maintained that safeguarding the lives of all political leaders is a constitutional responsibility that the government must uphold at all times.
Furthermore, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate warned that any attack on Obi would send the wrong message about Nigeria’s democratic journey. Therefore, he called on the Tinubu administration to ensure that the former Anambra State governor enjoys the same level of security as every other Nigerian.
He added that elections should be decided through the ballot box rather than threats or intimidation. According to Atiku, the credibility of any democratic process depends on fairness, equal opportunity and respect for the rights of every contestant.
Moreover, he urged security agencies to remain professional, neutral and committed to their constitutional duties. He said they must protect lives and property without showing preference to any political party or candidate.
The former vice president also appealed to political supporters across the country to reject violence. Instead, he encouraged peaceful engagement and issue-based campaigns as preparations for the 2027 election continue.
Meanwhile, Atiku noted that strong democracies are built on tolerance and mutual respect. He explained that opposition leaders should be allowed to express their views freely without facing threats or intimidation because political diversity strengthens democratic governance.
