A British man has been charged with theft in Singapore after police identified him over an alleged airport shoplifting incident more than two years after the jacket disappeared.
Police said the 26-year-old was arrested at Singapore’s Changi Airport while passing through the country.
In August 2024, surveillance cameras caught him taking a blue denim jacket off a display mannequin at a shop at Changi Airport. The jacket was worth about $275. By the time the store clerk noticed it was missing and police figured out who he was, he was already gone.
He left the country, but Singapore did not forget.
Fast forward to August 15 of this year. The man was passing through Changi Airport on a layover. Police were waiting. They arrested him in the transit area and officially charged him with theft this week.
The Singapore Police Force used the arrest to send a very clear message to anyone else thinking about swiping souvenirs.
“Offenders should not assume that they can evade detection simply by leaving Singapore after committing an offence,” the police said in a statement.
They even brought up another recent case to prove their point. A 50-year-old Polish woman stole two bottles of perfume from airport shops in June. She was caught in the transit area right before her flight took off and charged with two counts of theft.

Singapore takes shoplifting incredibly seriously. Anyone convicted of theft in the country can face up to seven years in prison.
The jacket was only worth a couple of hundred bucks. But trying to outrun Singapore’s airport security is a gamble where the house always wins, even if it takes them two years to collect the debt.
