Former senator Ben Murray-Bruce has revealed why Amaechi quit PDP with five other governors before the 2015 general election.
According to Daily Post, Bruce blamed the crisis on poor advice from some of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s closest aides. He said they ignored repeated warnings about growing discontent within the party.
Bruce recalled learning that Amaechi and several governors planned to leave the PDP. He immediately informed one of Jonathan’s senior aides. However, the aide reportedly replied, “If he wants to go, let him go.”
The former senator said the response shocked him. He believed the governors were too influential to ignore.
Later, Amaechi contacted Bruce directly. He warned that he and other governors would leave unless the PDP addressed their concerns.
In addition, Bruce said he asked another senior official about plans to meet the aggrieved governors. However, the official allegedly questioned why such a meeting was necessary.
Bruce then contacted Amaechi again. Meanwhile, he later discovered that Jonathan was in Australia during the political crisis.
According to Bruce, why Amaechi quit PDP reflected a deeper problem within the party. As a result, the PDP failed to resolve the crisis before the election.
Furthermore, Bruce argued that ignoring the early warnings weakened the PDP. Consequently, the party lost the 2015 presidential election.
Bruce also said political leaders depend on trusted advisers for accurate information. Therefore, poor advice can lead to costly political mistakes.
