The danger may not be over after the deadly Nepal-Tibet flash flood. China says a huge lake formed by a landslide upstream could burst its banks and send another wave of water and debris downstream, although officials now say the immediate risk has been brought under control.
Following the deadly flash flood triggered by a collapsed glacier near the Nepal-Tibet border, a massive barrier lake has formed upstream.
When a landslide blocks a river, the water has nowhere to go but up. As of Friday, an estimated 2.5 million cubic metres of water had already pooled behind the debris at the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that another three million cubic metres of water is expected to flow into the basin between Thursday and the weekend. Add in the heavy rain forecast for the region, and the math becomes deeply unsettling.
Officials issued a stark warning: there is a “high risk” that the natural dam could breach, sending a second, unpredictable wave of water and debris crashing downstream.
The reality on the ground was chaotic. For a time, most Chinese emergency services were forced to halt their advance. They stopped at a village roughly 7 kilometers from Gyirong Port, the main land crossing between Nepal and China that was devastated earlier in the week.
The reason was simple. The barrier lake was “overflowing non-stop,” creating an immediate threat of fresh floods or sudden debris flows. Rescue workers simply could not risk walking into a trap.

But nature is unpredictable, and so is the official messaging.
By Friday afternoon, state media shifted its tone, reporting that the “risk from the upstream barrier lake had come under control.” Rescue operations were given the green light to resume.
Details on exactly how that control was achieved remain scarce.
For the communities living in the shadow of these peaks, the word “control” offers little comfort. The ice is still melting. The rain is still falling. And the fragile wall of rock holding back millions of cubic meters of water is still there, waiting for the next shift.
