The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has defended its decision not to freeze the Ekiti State Government’s accounts during the state’s governorship election.
The agency made the clarification after facing criticism over its recent decision to freeze Osun State Government accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship election. According to Daily Post, some critics questioned why the EFCC acted in Osun but did not take the same step in Ekiti.
Responding to the concerns, the commission said the two cases were completely different. It explained that its actions were based on the facts uncovered during separate investigations rather than political considerations.
The EFCC stated that it found no suspicious financial transactions involving the Ekiti State Government that required such action. Therefore, it had no reason to freeze the state’s accounts during the election period.
However, the commission said investigators uncovered suspicious financial activities linked to Osun State Government accounts. As a result, it decided to place restrictions on the accounts while its investigation continues.
Furthermore, the agency rejected claims that it applied different standards to the two states. It insisted that every investigation is handled on its own merits and based on available evidence.
The commission also stressed that its operations are not influenced by elections or political pressure. Instead, it said every enforcement decision follows intelligence reports and the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, the EFCC urged Nigerians to avoid giving political meaning to its actions. It maintained that its responsibility is to protect public funds and investigate financial crimes wherever credible evidence exists.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out its duties professionally, fairly, and without fear or favour. It added that the investigation involving Osun remains ongoing, while no similar findings were recorded in Ekiti at the time of its governorship election.
