Ukraine’s former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for fresh elections, creating a huge political challenge for President Zelensky.
Ukraine’s former defense chief, Mykhailo Fedorov, made a dramatic public speech on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, demanding that his country hold fresh presidential elections despite the ongoing war with Russia.
The 35 year old politician released a video address on YouTube from the capital city of Kyiv, directly challenging President Volodymyr Zelensky just weeks after being unexpectedly removed from his cabinet position.
Fedorov’s sudden call for a vote is considered the biggest internal political challenge to Zelensky’s leadership since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The controversy comes because Ukraine has been under strict martial law rules since the war started in February 2022, which automatically puts all national elections on hold to keep the country stable.
However, Fedorov argued in his message that keeping democracy paused for years is dangerous for the country’s future.
He explained that citizens need a voice to elect trusted leaders and stop corruption inside government offices. Reports from major news outlets show that Fedorov was fired in July after falling out with military commanders, sparking public street protests across several cities.
In his widely watched video message, Fedorov urged government leaders to create a clear plan so citizens can vote safely while defending their land.
Speaking directly about why the nation must protect its democratic freedoms, Mykhailo Fedorov said, “Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia”.
He went on to explain why Ukrainians are risking their lives on the battlefield, adding that the country is fighting “precisely because we want to remain a free European state”.
Fedorov also spoke openly about the frustration many citizens feel regarding unexplained political decisions and firing sprees in government.
Criticizing how top positions are given out in Kyiv, he warned that it is “particularly dangerous when society develops the feeling that the main criterion for an appointment is not professionalism, results, or the ability to transform the country, but personal loyalty to the system“.

He added that “people cannot endlessly live in a state where they do not understand why certain decisions are made”.
Supporters of President Zelensky have pushed back against the call for voting, arguing that holding a national election while under constant Russian attack would play into enemy hands and divide the country.
Members of parliament noted that millions of citizens are living overseas as refugees or fighting on the frontlines, making a fair vote nearly impossible right now.
In very simple terms, a top leader who was recently fired from Ukraine’s war team is asking the government to let citizens vote for a president again.
He believes people should choose their leaders even during war, while the current president’s team says voting right now is too dangerous.
