Fresh controversy has hit the Ebonyi State local government elections after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejected the exercise.
The party accused the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) of conducting the polls despite existing court orders. According to Daily Post, the PDP said it would not accept the outcome of the election because of the alleged violation of court directives.
The opposition party questioned the decision to proceed with the polls while legal issues surrounding the election remained unresolved. It argued that EBSIEC should have respected the court and waited for the legal process to run its course.
The PDP’s rejection has now cast fresh doubt over the local government election in Ebonyi State. The party maintained that the issue was not simply about winning or losing council seats. Instead, it said the legality of the process must come first.
The opposition also accused EBSIEC of acting against the rule of law by allegedly ignoring court orders. The development could trigger another round of political and legal battles in the state.
The local government elections were expected to produce chairmen and councillors across Ebonyi’s local government areas. However, the PDP’s rejection has created fresh uncertainty over the acceptance of the results.
The party insisted that an election conducted in defiance of court orders cannot command its recognition. The controversy also comes at a sensitive period in Ebonyi politics.
Political parties are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. As a result, disputes surrounding the local polls could have wider political consequences.
The PDP’s latest position puts additional pressure on EBSIEC to defend its decision to conduct the election. It also means the outcome of the polls could face further challenges if the dispute proceeds through the courts.
For now, the PDP has drawn a clear line. The party has rejected the election and maintained that EBSIEC violated court orders by going ahead with the exercise.
