Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has said illegitimate electoral mandates are the biggest cause of insecurity in Nigeria.
He made the remark during an interview on Channels Television. Odinkalu argued that governments that emerge from disputed elections often struggle to gain public trust. As a result, tackling the country’s security challenges becomes more difficult.
According to Odinkalu, illegitimate electoral mandates weaken democratic institutions because many citizens lose confidence in the electoral process. Consequently, frustration grows, public trust declines, and political tension increases across the country.
He explained that governments without strong public legitimacy often find it difficult to unite citizens behind policies designed to improve security. Therefore, insecurity persists despite the efforts of security agencies to restore peace and maintain order.
Odinkalu stressed that credible elections are essential for national stability. He said every vote must count if Nigerians are to trust their leaders and democratic institutions.
Furthermore, transparent elections promote accountability, strengthen governance, and encourage peaceful participation in the democratic process.
The former NHRC chairman also said military operations alone cannot solve Nigeria’s security problems. Instead, he urged political leaders and electoral institutions to address the root causes of public dissatisfaction. According to him, restoring confidence in elections will reduce tension and support lasting peace.
Odinkalu maintained that illegitimate electoral mandates continue to threaten national unity, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
He called on stakeholders to protect the integrity of elections by ensuring that future polls are free, fair, and credible.
