A US jury is deciding if Lindsay Clancy is guilty of murder or legally insane due to postpartum psychosis after killing her three kids.
A jury in Massachusetts, United States, has begun deliberating to decide the fate of Lindsay Clancy, a thirty-six-year-old mother accused of killing her three young children.
The twelve jury members retired to a private room on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Plymouth Superior Court following intense closing arguments from both legal sides.
Clancy, a former hospital nurse, admits that she killed her 5 year old daughter Cora, 3 year old son Dawson, and 8 month old baby boy Callan in January 2023.
However, she has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, starting a major legal debate over her mental state.
The main focus of the court battle is deciding why the mother committed the terrible act. Defense lawyers argue that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, a rare mental breakdown after giving birth that makes a mother lose complete touch with real life.
Her lawyers say her brain was broken by severe depression and heavy prescription drugs, causing her to lose control of her actions.
After strangling her three small children with exercise bands in the family basement while her husband was out getting food, she jumped out of a second story window to end her own life, leaving her permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
On the other side, government prosecutors argue that Clancy knew exactly what she was doing and planned the whole attack.

They claim she intentionally sent her husband on long errands to a restaurant and pharmacy so she would have quiet time alone with the children without being stopped. Prosecutors insist she acted out of deep exhaustion and frustration rather than total madness.
Asking jurors to look at Clancy’s long struggle to get medical help before the tragic event, defense attorney Kevin Reddington stressed that his client had lost her mind.
Highlighting her mental state, defense attorney Kevin Reddington stated that “there’s nothing other than little chicken scratches because her mind was gone,” adding to the jury that “you have the medical records. You heard the testimony. You know her concerns. You know her fears”.
Rejecting the defense claims, prosecutor Jennifer Sprague argued that the mother planned the exact timing to carry out the act uninterrupted.
Describing the state’s view of the tragedy, prosecutor Jennifer Sprague stated that Clancy killed the children because “she was depressed. She was exhausted. She was done. She didn’t want to try anymore”.
Pushing back against the insanity argument, Sprague added that “she left them discarded on the basement floor like broken toys because she was done playing the game”.
The jury has four verdict options to choose from, ranging from first degree murder to complete acquittal due to legal insanity.
