Governor Uba Sani gave land plots and street names to Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic heroes, fulfilling a 30 year old promise in Kaduna State.
The Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has fulfilled an old government promise made thirty years ago to the brave football heroes who won the Olympic gold medal for Nigeria in 1996.
The official announcement was made on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during an official inspection tour of the ongoing rebuilding work at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna town.
Joined by famous football legends like Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal, and Emmanuel Babayaro, Governor Sani revealed that plots of land have been officially allocated to the players, while several major streets across Kaduna State will be named after them to honor their historic achievement forever.
The main reason for this reward is to honor the unforgettable victory of Nigeria’s “Dream Team,” which became the first African nation to win the Olympic football gold medal thirty years ago.
Government leaders at the time made several promises to the players, but many of those promises were forgotten over the years.
Governor Sani explained that heroes who bring glory and pride to the nation should not be forgotten after the celebrations end.
By giving them land and naming streets after them, the state government wants to show young people that hard work, passion, and service to the country will always be rewarded.
During the visit, the governor also showed the ex football stars the new work being done to rebuild the Ahmadu Bello Stadium into a modern facility with 33,000 seats and a world class playing pitch.
The state government plans to finish the stadium project by November 2026 so that major national and international football matches can return to Kaduna.
Speaking during the inspection visit, Governor Uba Sani explained why the state decided to reward the legends and rebuild the local sports center.
Praising the former players for their service to the nation, Governor Uba Sani stated that “lands have been allocated to the legends, while streets across Kaduna State will bear their names,” adding that the heroic players “deserve not merely our applause, but enduring recognition”.

Explaining the grand plan for the local stadium, Governor Sani added that “we are restoring Kaduna’s historic place at the heart of Nigerian sports; attracting major competitions; expanding opportunities for our young people; increasing internally generated revenue; and stimulating wider economic activity”.
Thanking the state leader for fulfilling the old promise, former Super Eagles star Daniel Amokachi expressed deep joy on behalf of his teammates.
Expressing gratitude to the governor, Daniel Amokachi stated that “we lack the words to thank the governor for this kind gesture,” noting that “he has shown that veterans who contributed to the development of football can still be appreciated in their lifetime”.
The land papers are being handed over while street signs bearing the players’ names will be installed across Kaduna State.
