Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman After More Than 50 Year

Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway at 96, ending more than five decades in the role as his son Howard Buffett takes over the board chairmanship.

Berkshire Hathaway announced on Friday that Warren Buffett, the 96-year-old legendary investor and former CEO, has been named Chairman Emeritus of the conglomerate, effective immediately.

The transition formalizes a new chapter for the company, following Buffett’s earlier decision this year to step down as CEO and hand the operational reins to his longtime lieutenant, Greg Abel. Under the new leadership structure, Buffett’s son, Howard Buffett, who has served as a Berkshire director since 1993, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Board.

Despite stepping back from the helm, the “Oracle of Omaha” will not disappear from the company he built. “As Chairman Emeritus, Mr. Buffett will remain a member of the Board of Directors and will continue to offer his valued judgment and perspective,” Berkshire Hathaway stated.

In a characteristically humble letter to shareholders, Buffett reflected on his unprecedented run at the top. “Father Time always wins,” the 96-year-old wrote. “He has, however, been generous with me.”

That generosity is reflected in the staggering legacy he leaves behind. Over the course of six decades, Buffett transformed Berkshire Hathaway from a struggling, fading textile business into a global investment juggernaut now valued at well over $1 trillion. Renowned for his disciplined, long-term strategy and his insistence on acquiring high-quality businesses at reasonable prices, he delivered steady, market-beating gains that made him the most trusted steward of capital in modern financial history.

Addressing the leadership shift, CEO Greg Abel emphasized the continuity of the company’s core principles. “The culture Warren built and the values he championed will remain at the heart of Berkshire, and Howard will be their guardian,” Abel said in a statement.

The appointment of Howard Buffett as Chairman is designed to ensure that the company’s unique corporate culture and ethical compass remain intact, serving as a strategic counterbalance alongside Abel’s day-to-day operational leadership.

As the financial world watches this historic passing of the torch, the message from Omaha is clear. While the man who defined value investing may be stepping into the twilight of his career, the empire he built is structured to endure, guided by the very principles he spent a lifetime perfecting.
