Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are scrambling to locate nearly 300 people who may have been exposed to Ebola after losing track of them during the country’s latest outbreak, a setback that is threatening efforts to contain one of the world’s deadliest viruses.

Officials say 299 identified contacts have not been found despite ongoing tracing efforts, creating concern that infected people could unknowingly spread the disease into new communities before showing symptoms. Contact tracing is considered one of the most important tools in stopping Ebola outbreaks because people who have been exposed can be monitored, tested quickly if symptoms develop, and vaccinated when appropriate. When those contacts disappear, the virus becomes much harder to contain.

The outbreak has already infected 18 people, including 10 confirmed cases and eight probable cases, according to health officials. Fifteen people have died, making this one of the deadliest Ebola outbreaks in the country in recent years despite the relatively small number of confirmed infections. The high death toll reflects the severity of the disease and the fact that several patients died before laboratory testing could confirm their infections.

The current outbreak is centred in Équateur province, where health teams have been working to identify everyone who may have come into contact with infected patients. So far, authorities have registered more than 1,400 contacts, but the fact that almost 300 remain unaccounted for has become one of the biggest challenges facing the response.

Health workers say several factors are making the search more difficult.

Some people have travelled to other communities, while others are reluctant to cooperate because of fear, misinformation, or mistrust of health authorities. In parts of the DRC, years of conflict and weak infrastructure have also made disease surveillance far more complicated, particularly in remote areas where roads, communications, and healthcare services remain limited.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. Unlike airborne diseases, outbreaks can usually be brought under control when patients are isolated quickly, and their close contacts are identified, monitored, and vaccinated. That is why public health experts view missing contacts as such a serious concern.

The World Health Organization and Congolese health authorities have deployed vaccination teams, surveillance officers, and emergency response workers to affected communities, while neighbouring countries continue monitoring their borders for possible cross-border transmission. Previous Ebola outbreaks in the DRC have shown that rapid contact tracing and vaccination can stop transmission chains, but delays increase the risk that isolated cases develop into wider community spread.

The latest outbreak comes just days after France confirmed its first imported Ebola case involving a doctor who had recently returned from the DRC, underscoring how quickly infectious diseases can cross borders through international travel. Although there is no evidence that the French case is linked to the missing contacts, health experts say it highlights why aggressive containment efforts inside the DRC remain so important.

For now, health officials are continuing house-to-house searches and working with local community leaders to encourage anyone who may have been exposed to come forward. Every missing contact found and monitored reduces the chance of the virus spreading further.

The concern is that until those nearly 300 people are accounted for, the outbreak cannot truly be considered under control. In the Ebola response, success is measured not only by the number of patients treated but by the number of potential infections that are prevented before they ever happen.
