Comedian Oluwadolarz shared how he quit music, created 20 fake Instagram pages to boost his posts, and built his comedy career with his brother.
Popular Nigerian comedian, actor, and online content creator Ogunleye Olamide Babatunde, widely known as Oluwadolarz, has opened up about the difficult steps he took to build his comedy brand, revealing how he quit his early music career, created 20 fake Instagram accounts to like his own posts, and began making skits alongside his younger brother.
The famous entertainer shared these deeply personal experiences while speaking at the Skit to Stardom masterclass event organized for emerging content creators in Cameroon.
Reflecting on his long path to success, the skit maker explained that his initial drive was not passion, but a desperate desire to escape poverty and build a better financial future for his family.
Before gaining widespread fame on social media platforms, the creator originally started his journey in the Nigerian entertainment space as a young upcoming musician trying to make a name for himself.
Explaining why he abandoned his musical dreams after realizing how overcrowded the music industry was, Oluwadolarz stated: “I used to be an Artist. I started with music. But then in Nigeria, the upcoming, dey always plenty pass fans. So you can be in a show, and the whole audience are your colleagues. So you are literally performing to your competitors.”
Realizing that singing was not bringing the needed breakthrough, the artist turned his attention to online video production after watching successful kid comedians online.
Revealing how watching popular online skit creators inspired him to feature his younger brother, Intelligent Tope, in comedy sketches, Oluwadolarz noted: “It was Mark Angel at first, because I have a brother, Tope, intelligent Tope. Then he was like three years old. We were watching Mark Angel comedy, and then I saw this girl, Emmanuella, and I’m like, I looked at my brother. You can’t be useless now. Look at your mates. And then we started it.”
The comedian confessed that their early attempts at creating funny content were very difficult because they lacked natural comedy skills and were driven purely by money.
Admitting that their initial videos were dry and unfunny, Oluwadolarz declared: “It was not easy at first because we didn’t start off because we had passion for it. We started because we wanted to be rich. That was it. And then we were so dry. We were not funny at all.”
Determined to make his videos look popular and defend his work against internet critics, the content creator resorted to managing multiple fake social media profiles by himself.
Explaining the extreme measures he took to boost his online engagement during his early days, Oluwadolarz confessed: “I had to, like, create 20 Instagram pages to comment on my posts myself, like my videos myself, share it myself. In fact, sometimes it would be like, when somebody comments hate comments, we’d go to the other Instagram page and start saying, It’s funny. You are the one that is sad. You know?”
Over time, his mindset shifted as he fell in love with content creation and decided to stop copying other famous comedians to develop his own unique style.
Describing how he began enjoying the process and focusing on original ideas, Oluwadolarz explained: “But eventually, I started finding joy in it. I started, started seeing it as something that would make sense. So I told myself, you know what? Stop watching these guys’ content and start trying to see what you can do by yourself.”
The big turning point came when he paid close attention to his younger brother’s natural humor after a normal day at school.
Recalling the exact moment that inspired their first viral comedy script, Oluwadolarz shared: “So naturally, Tope is a very funny boy, very, very funny boy. So one day I was just watching him. He came back from school, right? So I asked him, How was your exam today? And then he said, Oh, they gave him a question that he did not know, so he gave them an answer that they would never know. And I’m like, That’s it. Let’s shoot this content. And that was it.”
Reflecting on his journey while mentoring younger creators in Central Africa, the popular comedian expressed happiness over how far he has come from those early days of struggle.
Expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity to teach rising talents in the industry, Oluwadolarz wrote in his post caption: “One of the most fulfilling things about growth is being able to share what you’ve learned along the way. Being in Cameroon for the Skit to Stardom gave me the opportunity to share my experiences, lessons, and knowledge with amazing creators who are also finding their way in this industry. It’s all about helping others learn, grow and find their own path. I’m grateful to be part of it.”
Fans and fellow comedians have praised the star for his honesty about his early struggles.
