Heavy rain has blown off the roof of Akachukwu Di Ya Lodge near Coal City University in Enugu, damaging properties belonging to 62 students.
A popular off-campus student accommodation known as Akachukwu Di Ya Lodge, located near Coal City University in Enugu State, has suffered severe damage after a heavy downpour blew off the entire roof of the building.
The unexpected rainstorm swept through the area during heavy rainfall in Enugu, leaving many rooms completely exposed to the falling rain and forcing students to scamper for safety.
The affected building serves as a home to about 62 university students who reside off-campus while attending their daily classes.
As the storm grew stronger, the powerful wind tore through the top section of the building, lifting the zinc roofing sheets and exposing the rooms inside to severe flooding from the sky.
Speaking during an on-the-scene report by ModernCrux on the sad incident, students living in the lodge confirmed that God protected them and no lives were lost during the storm.
However, the occupants expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their personal items, school materials, and room properties, which were soaked and destroyed by the pouring water.
Recounting the scary experience, affected students living in the lodge disclosed that “no lives were lost.”
However, the young scholars lamented the sudden disaster that hit their accommodation, stating that: “a significant amount of our personal belongings and other properties were damaged by the heavy rainfall after the roof was removed.”
The terrible situation has left many of the 62 young residents stranded, as their mattresses, clothes, books, reading tables, and electronics were drenched in water before they could move them to safety.
Many of the occupants spent hours trying to rescue whatever items were left unharmed, while others had to seek temporary shelter in neighboring lodges and friends’ apartments nearby.
This incident has once again brought to the front burner serious worries regarding the safety, structural strength, and general condition of private student accommodations across Enugu State.
Many students and local observers are now calling on house owners and landlords to build stronger houses that can withstand bad weather conditions, especially during the heavy rainy season.
According to related weather disaster reports, torrential rains and strong winds across Enugu State have repeatedly caused structural damage to residential homes and student hostels, leaving occupants in distress.
While the exact cost of the property damage and the official technical reason for the structural failure have not yet been formally released by local authorities, residents know that the damage happened during the downpour.
ModernCrux will continue to follow the story closely and bring fresh updates to the public as more details become available.
