The PDP 2027 election will be difficult to win unless the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) resolves its lingering internal crisis, according to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
He said the opposition party must first rebuild unity and regain the confidence of Nigerians before expecting success at the polls.
According to Daily Post, Wike made the remarks on Thursday while speaking about the PDP’s preparations for the next general election. He argued that the party cannot hope to return to power without addressing the divisions that have weakened it in recent years.
The minister stressed that elections are not won through wishful thinking or political rhetoric. Instead, he said parties must demonstrate leadership, unity and a clear vision that inspires public confidence. Therefore, he believes the PDP has significant work to do before the 2027 presidential election.
Wike maintained that the PDP 2027 election would remain an uphill battle if the party continues to struggle with internal disagreements. According to him, unresolved conflicts have reduced the party’s strength and distracted leaders from focusing on issues that matter to Nigerians.
He explained that political parties succeed when members put collective interests ahead of personal ambitions. However, he said the PDP has often been weighed down by disagreements that have created unnecessary tension within its ranks.
Furthermore, Wike insisted that rebuilding the opposition requires sincere commitment from every stakeholder. He noted that party leaders must embrace reforms, strengthen internal democracy and restore discipline if they hope to convince Nigerians that the PDP is ready to govern again.
The FCT minister also dismissed the belief that being the main opposition party automatically guarantees electoral success. Instead, he argued that voters expect political parties to present practical solutions to national challenges rather than relying on past achievements.
According to him, Nigerians will judge every political party based on its credibility, organisation and ability to provide effective leadership. As a result, he urged PDP leaders to focus on rebuilding public trust instead of assuming victory is inevitable.
Meanwhile, political activities have continued to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election. Several opposition politicians have intensified consultations, while discussions about possible alliances have also gained attention across the country.
Despite those conversations, Wike believes the PDP must first resolve its internal problems before looking outward. He argued that a divided party cannot effectively challenge a well-organised opponent during a presidential election.
In addition, he maintained that reconciliation among party members should remain a top priority. He said lasting peace within the PDP would create a stronger foundation for future campaigns and improve the party’s chances of reconnecting with voters nationwide.
According to Wike, unity alone is not enough without responsible leadership. He urged party officials to demonstrate transparency, accountability and commitment to the principles that originally attracted many Nigerians to the PDP.
His comments come at a time when political parties are gradually positioning themselves ahead of the next election cycle. Although campaigns have not officially begun, key political figures have continued to outline their expectations and strategies for 2027.
Nevertheless, Wike maintained that genuine reforms must take precedence over political calculations. He warned that failing to address the party’s internal challenges could further weaken its chances of returning to power.
The minister has repeatedly called for changes within the PDP, arguing that internal stability is essential for future electoral success. Consequently, his latest remarks are expected to generate fresh debate among party stakeholders about the direction of the opposition.
As discussions continue, Wike believes the PDP 2027 election will remain a major challenge unless the party demonstrates unity, discipline and a renewed commitment to winning back the confidence of Nigerians.
