Police arrested former Imo Governor Rochas Okorocha in Abuja over alleged forgery, releasing him on bail after an hour of questioning.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested former governor of Imo State and ex-senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, inside a popular hotel located in central Abuja.
The prominent politician was taken into police custody on Monday night, October 12, 2026, at REIZ Continental Hotel over serious allegations involving criminal conspiracy, document forgery, and impersonation.
The official confirmation of his arrest came on Tuesday morning, October 13, 2026, through the Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Aniete Iniedu.
Speaking directly during an interview broadcast nationwide on Channels Television, the police spokesperson disclosed that the former governor was released on administrative bail after undergoing intensive interrogation for about one hour.
Explaining the official reason behind the unexpected hotel arrest and confirming that the former governor was granted temporary bail after questioning, CSP Aniete Iniedu told Channels Television: “The former governor was released on bail after undergoing approximately one hour of interrogation. He was subsequently directed to return to the Force Headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning as investigations continue.”
Police sources disclosed that the sudden arrest became necessary because Okorocha repeatedly failed to honor official police letters inviting him to appear for questioning regarding ongoing criminal investigations.
The police had initially summoned him to appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on September 2, 2026. However, at the official request of his legal team, the appointment was rescheduled to September 8, 2026.
Detailing why police detectives had to move in and track him down at his hotel suite, police officers noted that the former governor failed to appear on the rescheduled date, leaving law enforcement officers with no other choice than to track him down and secure his presence.
Highlighting the official reason why police officers went to locate the politician at his hotel residence in Abuja, police sources explained: “He was initially invited for questioning on September 2, but the appointment was rescheduled to September 8 at the request of his lawyers. However, he reportedly failed to honour the rescheduled invitation, prompting the police to take action.”
While police authorities have not yet released full details regarding the exact documents forged or persons impersonated, security sources indicate that the investigation is tied to petitions alleging falsification of official documents and disputed political materials.
Reiterating that the matter is far from over despite granting him bail, police officers instructed Rochas Okorocha to report back to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday afternoon for further questioning, while detectives continue gathering evidence.
Legal teams representing the former governor are currently accompanying him to the Force Headquarters as police investigations proceed.
