An explosion has claimed the lives of two men in Imo State, prompting a fresh Imo explosion investigation by the police.
The incident happened inside a large drainage channel along Old Nekede Road in Owerri West Local Government Area, opposite Lakeside Hotel.
Police officers, alongside members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, secured the area shortly after the explosion. Their immediate priority was to ensure no additional explosive materials were present. The operation also helped calm fears among residents who had gathered near the scene.
The two victims suffered severe burns during the blast and were rushed to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Owerri for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, both men later died from the injuries they sustained.
According to the Imo State Police Command, preliminary findings indicate that the victims were suspected scrap metal scavengers. Investigators believe they were inside the drainage channel when the explosion occurred. However, the exact cause of the blast has not been confirmed, and the Imo explosion investigation is still ongoing.
Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye said officers immediately cordoned off the area while the EOD Unit carried out a detailed search. He explained that the team carefully examined the location to make sure there were no remaining explosives or other threats. After completing the operation, authorities declared the area safe for residents and road users.
The police encouraged residents to report anything unusual to the nearest police station or other security agency for proper handling. Officials said public cooperation would support the Imo explosion investigation and help prevent similar incidents.
