Omoyele Sowore has reignited his clash with Rotimi Amaechi with a pointed claim about Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate said Amaechi benefited from the struggle for democracy that he and other activists fought for.
According to Daily Post, Sowore made the remarks during a heated exchange at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference.
Sowore argued that Amaechi would not have become Rivers State governor or later served as a federal minister without the sacrifices made by democracy activists. He also questioned what Amaechi achieved during his years in public office.
The former Rivers State governor served as Speaker of the state House of Assembly before becoming governor in 2007. He later served as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, Sowore said occupying several political positions did not automatically make Amaechi a successful leader. He accused politicians who had held power of returning to seek more offices without answering for their past records.
Sowore maintained that Nigerians should scrutinise the records of politicians seeking power again in 2027. He also took aim at the political class over the country’s continuing problems.
According to him, many politicians who benefited from Nigeria’s democratic system failed to deliver meaningful change when given the opportunity. The confrontation came as several prominent political figures gathered at the NBA conference to discuss national issues ahead of the 2027 elections.
Amaechi, who is now part of the opposition coalition, has also been positioning himself in Nigeria’s emerging political realignment. The exchange between both men has added another layer to the growing political tension ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore’s comments are likely to keep attention on the records of former officeholders as politicians prepare for another major electoral contest.
