Sowore Kuje Detention Raises Concerns After Two Inmate Deaths

Fresh concern has surrounded Sowore Kuje detention after reports linked two inmate deaths to growing worries about healthcare at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

According to SaharaReporters, at least 37 inmates have been undergoing treatment for tuberculosis (TB) since December 2025. The report has drawn renewed attention to conditions inside the custodial facility.

Omoyele Sowore has remained at the Kuje Correctional Centre since June 22, 2026. Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand pending the hearing of his bail application.

The latest report followed the deaths of two inmates at the facility.

SaharaReporters reported that Benjamin Relass died on June 16, 2026. The publication alleged that he did not receive adequate medical care before his death.

Another inmate, Sulieman Ajari, also reportedly died days later. According to the report, his health deteriorated while he waited for medical treatment.

The report further claimed that Sowore was initially kept in the same section as inmates receiving treatment for tuberculosis. That claim has increased public attention on Sowore Kuje detention and the possible health risks within the correctional centre.

The reported deaths have also sparked fresh debate about the quality of healthcare available to inmates. They have raised questions about how medical cases are handled inside the facility.

However, the officer in charge of the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Rasheed Ogundare, rejected claims that inmates with tuberculosis were housed with the general prison population.

Ogundare said the inmate diagnosed with tuberculosis had been separated from other inmates for treatment and was recovering. He also stated that most inmates had been enrolled in a health insurance programme to improve access to healthcare services.

Meanwhile, Sowore Kuje detention is expected to continue until the court rules on his bail application. Justice Mohammed Umar fixed June 30, 2026, for the ruling.

As public attention remains on the case, Sowore Kuje detention has continued to generate discussion over inmate welfare and medical care at the Kuje Correctional Centre. The claims and official response have placed the facility under fresh public scrutiny.
