China’s Tencent is putting another AI model into the hands of developers and researchers, with a preview designed to handle software engineering, academic research and financial analysis. The release adds to China’s growing push to build powerful AI systems that can be used openly around the world.
The artificial intelligence race is no longer just about who can build the biggest brain. It is about who can make it useful, accessible, and honest about its flaws. On Friday, a major Chinese tech giant took a step in that direction, dropping a preview of a new open-source AI model for the public to test.
The model, named Hy4 preview, is now available on Hugging Face, a popular hub for open-source software. It is designed to tackle heavy lifting like software engineering, financial analysis, and complex research tasks.
Under the hood, it uses a “mixture-of-experts” design. While the total parameter count sits at a massive 770 billion, the system only activates about 49 billion for any given text request. It is a practical way to handle complex prompts without carrying unnecessary computational weight.
Tencent plans to weave this technology directly into its own everyday products, including developer tools like CodeBuddy and WorkBuddy.

But the company did not try to sell this preview as a perfect, finished product.
In a rare moment of transparency, Tencent noted that this early-release version has quirks. It can sometimes take longer than necessary to work through complex questions. It also has a tendency to over-verify its own answers, essentially second-guessing itself before finally responding.
This release comes as Tencent ramps up its artificial intelligence investments in an increasingly crowded market. It follows the April launch of Hunyuan 3.0, which was its first major release since bringing on former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu to lead its AI platform development.
Opening up the code is a bold move. It invites developers worldwide to poke holes, find bugs, and build on top of the foundation.
For now, the technology is still being tested in real-world conditions. It is undeniably powerful, but it is still learning how to trust its own conclusions.
