A quiet evening near a train station in Caen turned into a scene of panic after a car drove into a group of people, killing two and leaving 10 others injured. Police have arrested a 26-year-old man, but investigators are still trying to understand what happened.
What happened outside Caen station on Wednesday evening has left a northern French city trying to piece together how a reported fight between two groups ended with a car being driven into a crowd.
Two people are dead and ten others are injured after a vehicle deliberately drove into a group of pedestrians. Local prefect David Clavière confirmed the grim details to reporters on the scene, noting that seven of the injured remain in critical condition.
Video footage from the area showed a heavy, flashing police presence. Ambulances wove through cordoned-off streets as bystanders gathered in shock, watching emergency crews work near the station entrance.
Authorities moved quickly to contain the situation. The suspect, a 26-year-old man born in Russia, was tracked by the city’s extensive CCTV network. He was arrested a short time later, roughly 20 kilometers away in the coastal port town of Ouistreham.
Police noted he was not previously known to intelligence services, having only minor traffic offenses on his record.
Witnesses reported that a physical fight had broken out between two groups just before the car surged forward. Investigators are currently trying to piece together exactly how a street altercation escalated into a deadly vehicular assault. All of the victims are reported to be men between the ages of 17 and 40.
“For the moment, we are not dealing with a terrorist motive, but the investigation is only just beginning,” said Bruno Coutanceau, a top security official for Caen.
Caen Mayor Aristide Olivier echoed that uncertainty. Detectives from the Specialised Crime Division are now tasked with understanding the driver’s precise actions and state of mind. Meanwhile, some of the injured remain in the emergency ward of a nearby hospital, their conditions still fragile.
