The UK has asked Israel for more information about the detention of 22-year-old British student activist Finn Joughin, who was allegedly dragged away by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
The UK government has raised the case of a British student activist who was detained after a confrontation with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
Finn Joughin, a 22-year-old student activist from London, was in Umm Al-Kheir in the occupied West Bank last Saturday. According to fellow activists on the ground, the trouble began when children from a nearby settler family started intervening in the game, then moved to dismantle a local fence.
Online Footage shows Joughin standing by the fence, using his own body to shield it as a child pushes against him.
Moments later, settlers forcibly removed him and took him to a nearby outpost.
Israeli police later stated that a foreign national who “disrupted public order” was detained by settler security personnel who suspected him of an indecent act against a minor.
His lawyer, Inbar Shaked Vardi, flatly denies the claims. She told reporters that the indecent act allegation was only added to the paperwork after an initial accusation of assault.
“In every single instance, it was the settler kids who approached Finn,” said Matthew, a fellow activist who was present and declined to give his surname.
Joughin is now scheduled to be deported back to the UK. His lawyer suspects this rapid removal is no coincidence.
“Police use deportation in order to get what they want, which is to get activists outside of the West Bank while continuing to allow settlers to do what they do,” Vardi explained.

The British Foreign Office confirmed it is aware of the incident and has raised the case directly with Israeli authorities.
This arrest does not happen in a vacuum. Settler violence in the West Bank has surged dramatically since October 2023. The situation has grown so volatile that even Israeli leaders have recently condemned settler actions, with President Isaac Herzog calling recent events a “crossing of a red line.”
Joughin will be on a flight home soon. The case against him may quietly fade away once he crosses the border. But for the activists left behind, the message is clear: standing in the way of the fence makes you the easiest target to remove.
