Surgeons in London successfully used live AI during brain surgery to remove a tumour and save a man’s sight.
A 48 year old British man has become the first person in the world to undergo a brain tumour operation assisted by live artificial intelligence.
The historic surgery took place at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, which is part of University College London Hospitals.
Details of the operation were released on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after the patient made a full recovery. The patient, Rhys Hibbert, had an eleven millimetre tumour growing on his pituitary gland that was crushing his eyesight. Without the operation, doctors warned that he faced complete blindness.
The main reason this operation is such a big deal is that operating on the base of the brain is extremely dangerous. The pituitary gland sits right next to vital blood vessels and sensitive eye nerves, meaning moving a tool just one millimetre the wrong way can cause a stroke, brain damage, or death.
During the surgery, human doctors remained in full control of all instruments. However, a smart computer system watched the camera feed in real time and painted bright colors on the screen to highlight tiny blood vessels and nerves so the surgeons knew exactly which areas to avoid while taking out the tumour.
The smart computer was trained by watching hundreds of old surgical videos, allowing it to spot body parts faster and better than the human eye.
Thanks to the computer guiding the doctors, the operation was a complete success, saving the patient’s vision and allowing him to walk independently within a single week.
Ecstatic about getting his life back, patient Rhys Hibbert described the moment he woke up after the operation, stating that “when I came round … I could see everything in the room clearly”.

Celebrating his total recovery, Hibbert added that “it feels like I’ve got a 360 degree panoramic view of everything around me”.
Highlighting how the computer tool learned to assist human doctors during delicate moments, technical lead Dr. Sophia Bano explained that “by learning from hundreds of surgical videos, the system has been exposed to a breadth of surgical examples that would take a surgeon many years to encounter”.
Dr. Bano added that the technology “is designed to help recognise critical anatomy, surgical instruments and tissue interactions in real time, supporting the surgeon during highly delicate procedures”.
Rhys Hibbert has already returned to his normal job as a customer service manager. Medical experts say this success proves that AI tools can help doctors perform safer surgeries across hospitals worldwide.
