“Please Give Your Children Extra Money For The Journey” — NYSC Appeals To Parents

The National Youth Service Corps has appealed to Nigerian parents to support their children with extra transport money as they travel to orientation camps across the country.

According to the NYSC Director-General, Olakunle Nafiu, many corps members put themselves at risk by trying to complete long journeys in one stretch, even when it becomes late and unsafe on the road.

He said some of them continue travelling at night simply because they do not have enough money to stop at a hotel or rest point.

Speaking in Abuja, Nafiu advised parents to give their children enough money to cover unexpected delays, feeding and accommodation if they need to spend the night during the trip.

“We always advise them not to travel after 6 pm, but some keep moving because they don’t have enough money to stop over,” he said.

The NYSC boss explained that the safety of corps members remains a major concern, especially with the security challenges facing some parts of the country.

He added that the scheme is working closely with security agencies to monitor routes and improve the safety of those travelling to camps.

He also encouraged prospective corps members to plan their trips early instead of rushing at the last minute, saying proper planning could help them avoid dangerous situations.

Nafiu further warned Nigerians not to pay anyone promising to influence NYSC postings, stressing that deployment is handled automatically by the system and cannot be manipulated.
