Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru passed away at the age of 57 following a brief illness, as confirmed by his family and the AGN.
Nollywood has been thrown into deep sorrow following the sudden death of veteran movie star Francis Duru, who passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness.
The heartbreaking news was officially confirmed by his grieving family on Friday, October 23, 2026, through an emotional statement shared across his verified Instagram page.
The death of the legendary actor, who entertained millions of homes across Africa for over thirty years, has sparked a massive wave of tributes from fans, movie lovers, and fellow actors who grew up watching his legendary performances on television.
The sad event was also confirmed by the leadership of the Nigerian actors’ body, which expressed shock over the painful loss of another major pioneer in the movie business.
Paying a painful tribute to the late movie star on social media, National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, wrote: “Another great thespian gone…Rest in peace, Francis Duru!!”
His family members expressed deep sadness as they broke the news to the public, thanking fans for their prayers and support during this heavy time.
Announcing the passing of the famous actor on his official social media page, the Duru family stated: “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
The late actor, who was born on July 27, 1969, became a household name across the country after playing the famous character Ahanna in the 1995 classic movie Rattlesnake, which was produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
Throughout his long acting career, he starred in scores of popular movies. He won several important awards, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in the Igbo film Mboputa.
Before his death, the veteran actor had faced very painful times in his personal life, including losing his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
His passing comes just a few months after the actor publicly came out in June 2026 to deny social media rumors claiming he was critically ill, after a video showed him looking frail.
Reassuring his worried fans at that time, the late actor had described the viral videos about his health as completely false and misleading, urging the public to ignore fake news.
However, four months after dismissing those sickness rumors, his family formally announced that he lost his life following a short illness, although they did not reveal the exact name of the illness that took his life.
Movie stars and fans have continued to post condolence messages to comfort his wife, Adokiye Duru, whom he married in 2003, and his surviving children. The family will announce burial arrangements in due course.
