Senior AAU lecturer Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe was found dead in an Ekpoma hotel room after lodging with a 21 year old woman.

A senior university lecturer at the Edo State owned Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died inside a hotel room.

The sudden tragic event happened on Monday night, October 5, 2026, at a popular hotel located around the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The late university teacher, who was working in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science at the institution, reportedly lodged at the hotel facility where he engaged the services of a 21 year old woman named Angela Defa Jacob.

The whole problem started when the late lecturer entered his hotel room with the young woman to rest and spend time together.

According to official reports from the police, Dr. Uwuigbe later asked the 21 year old woman to step out of the bedroom and walk down to buy drinking water for him.

However, when the young woman returned with the water a short while later, she saw the lecturer lying completely still on the bed and immediately raised a loud alarm to call for help.

Explaining what happened when the report reached the police station around 8 o’clock that night, police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem stated that: “On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21 year old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob”.

The police officer went further to describe how the man was discovered dead, saying: “He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room”.

The police spokesperson also confirmed that: “The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police”.

To make sure that proper checks are carried out to determine what really killed the teacher, the police officers quickly took three people into custody.

Those held by the police include the 21 year old woman, the owner of the hotel, and the hotel manager. Officers carrying out the investigation have deposited the body of the deceased teacher at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary in Ekpoma, where doctors will conduct medical tests to find out the real cause of his sudden death.

Meanwhile, the management of Ambrose Alli University has confirmed that the late Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe was indeed a full staff member of the school.

However, the school authority made it very clear that the sad incident had nothing to do with the university campus, school work, or official university business.

Speaking on behalf of the university, the Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, explained that: “We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life”.

The school spokesman also cleared the air regarding the identity of the young woman involved in the matter, adding that: “The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution”.

The Edo State Police Command is still carrying out deep investigations to uncover every detail surrounding the teacher’s demise.

Many students and staff members in Ekpoma have expressed shock over the sad event, while waiting for the police to finish their job and release the full medical report.
