The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tackle Nigeria’s growing security and economic challenges or step aside.
The lawmakers made the demand while expressing concern over what they described as worsening Tinubu insecurity, economic hardship, and political uncertainty ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lawmakers Raise Concerns Over Tinubu Insecurity
According to the Minority Caucus, many Nigerians continue to suffer from attacks by armed groups, kidnappings, and other violent crimes across different parts of the country. The lawmakers said the Federal Government must make the protection of lives and property its highest priority.
They argued that the Tinubu insecurity situation has left many communities living in fear. Furthermore, they said businesses are struggling because of persistent violence and the rising cost of living.
In addition, the caucus pointed to inflation, unemployment, and the high cost of basic goods as major challenges affecting millions of Nigerians. It stressed that citizens expect practical solutions rather than political promises.
The lawmakers also expressed concern over what they described as judicial controversies and signs of democratic backsliding. According to them, these developments could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions if urgent action is not taken.
Minority Caucus Urges Immediate Action
The Minority Caucus maintained that President Tinubu should either refocus his administration on solving the country’s pressing problems or step aside if he is unable to effectively carry out his responsibilities.
According to the lawmakers, Nigeria needs strong leadership that can restore security, improve economic conditions, and rebuild public trust in government institutions.
Meanwhile, the caucus insisted that addressing Tinubu insecurity should remain the administration’s top priority because every other area of national development depends on peace and stability.
The lawmakers added that Nigerians deserve a government that responds quickly to security threats and creates an environment where businesses can thrive and families can live without fear.
However, they noted that insecurity is only one part of the country’s challenges. They said the Federal Government must also address inflation, unemployment, poverty, and other economic issues that continue to affect households across the country.
Presidency Defends Government Policies
The latest criticism comes as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In recent months, opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the Federal Government’s handling of security and the economy. As a result, debates over governance have become more intense.
However, the Presidency has consistently defended its policies, insisting that ongoing reforms are necessary to stabilise the economy and improve the country’s long-term prospects.
Government officials have also maintained that efforts to strengthen security operations are producing results in several parts of Nigeria, although many communities continue to experience attacks.
Nevertheless, the Minority Caucus believes more decisive action is needed. It argued that resolving Tinubu insecurity and improving the economy should take precedence over political considerations.
The lawmakers concluded that Nigerians are looking for visible improvements in their daily lives. They said the government must act swiftly to restore confidence, reduce insecurity, create economic opportunities, and strengthen democratic institutions before the next general election.
