AAC Slams Tinubu Over Sowore’s Detention, Warns Against Threat to Democracy

The AAC warns Tinubu after the African Action Congress (AAC) strongly criticised the continued detention of its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

The party described the development as a dangerous signal for Nigeria’s democracy and urged the Federal Government to respect citizens’ constitutional rights.

The statement followed a Federal High Court decision to remand Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja after his bail was revoked. The court is expected to hear his application challenging the decision at its next sitting.

According to Saharatv report, the detention of an opposition figure over comments critical of the government raises serious concerns about freedom of speech. It argued that democratic societies must protect the rights of citizens to express different opinions without fear of intimidation.

Party says democratic values must be protected

The AAC warns Tinubu that actions capable of silencing opposition voices could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions. The party maintained that democracy thrives when citizens can freely question leaders and hold public officials accountable.

It also claimed that using government institutions against political opponents creates the wrong impression about the country’s commitment to justice and the rule of law. According to the AAC, every Nigerian deserves equal treatment before the law, regardless of political affiliation.

Furthermore, the party called on civil society organisations, legal professionals and democratic groups to remain vigilant. It urged them to continue defending the constitutional rights of Nigerians whenever those rights appear to be under pressure.

The AAC stressed that protecting democracy requires fairness, transparency and respect for due process. It added that these principles should guide every action taken by government authorities.

Calls grow for Sowore’s release

The AAC warns Tinubu while demanding Sowore’s immediate release and insisting that the legal process should remain free from political influence. The party argued that criticism of government policies should never become the basis for punishing opposition figures.

Meanwhile, several rights groups have also expressed concern over the development. Some organisations believe the case could have wider implications for freedom of expression and political participation in Nigeria. They called on authorities to ensure that justice is served fairly and openly.

The court will continue hearing the matter in the coming days. Many observers are expected to monitor the proceedings closely because of the public interest surrounding the case.

As reactions continue across the country, the AAC warns Tinubu that safeguarding democratic institutions remains essential for Nigeria’s future.

The party insisted that respect for the rule of law, judicial independence and citizens’ fundamental freedoms will strengthen democracy rather than weaken it.
