Political groups accuse Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde of using public state money to fund his 2027 presidential campaign.
The African Action Congress alongside other political opposition groups in Oyo State have launched a heavy attack against Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of taking public state money to sponsor his personal political dream of becoming the president of Nigeria in 2027.
The serious accusation broke out on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following widespread campaign posters, large billboards, and political gatherings popping up across different cities in Oyo State and Bauchi State.
Opposition parties and political watchdogs revealed that state government money that should be used to fix bad roads, build good schools, equip local health centers, and pay workers is allegedly being channeled into private political meetings, travel expenses, and campaign materials to push the governor’s 2027 presidential ambition.
The main reason why political parties are raising alarm right now is because the state is facing hard economic times, and citizens are suffering from high cost of living while government money is allegedly being wasted on election plans that are still far away.
Under Nigerian political rules and public treasury laws, it is illegal for any sitting governor or government worker to use taxpayers’ money to fund personal campaign activities or sponsor political party programs.
Opposition leaders warned that spending state resources on a political journey outside the state will leave Oyo State with heavy debts and broken public infrastructure before the governor leaves office in May 2027.
Political campaigners and civil groups warned the governor to stop spending government money on election matters and focus on solving problems in the state.
Calling out the state government over the alleged misuse of public money, political party spokespersons declared that public money belongs to the people.

Warning that the governor will face deep checks after leaving office, opposition leaders stated that “he would be made to cough out all the public funds he wasted on it”.
Expressing concern that local development is being left behind while money is being spent across other states, political critics insisted that taxpayers deserve honesty.
Pointing out the waste of public funds on early political noise, party officials added that “he cannot achieve his aim of emerging as the Political Comedian of the Year without wasting the resources of the Pacesetters State, and this would not augur well for the good people of the state”.
Opposition parties are preparing to submit petition documents to anti-corruption agencies to check government accounts in Ibadan.
