Death row inmate Christa Pike woke up in a hospital after surviving a botched lethal injection execution attempt in Tennessee.
Death row inmate Christa Pike has woken up in a hospital bed and spoken her first words after surviving a botched execution attempt by lethal injection in Tennessee, United States.
The female prisoner, who spent 30 years on death row for killing her college classmate in 1995, lost consciousness and remained in critical condition after prison officers injected her twice with a heavy lethal drug called pentobarbital.
However, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Pike surprisingly woke up, started breathing without a machine, and spoke directly to her legal team and hospital workers.
The failed execution attempt happened inside the state prison on Wednesday night, September 30, 2026, when executioners tried to carry out the court sentence using lethal chemicals.
During the process, prison guards struck her arms with at least seven different needles to find a working vein, causing severe swelling, pain, and heavy damage to her hands.
After receiving two full doses of the execution drug, Pike did not die as expected; instead, she continued to breathe and snore loudly for more than an hour until an ambulance was called to rush her to a hospital.
Describing her sudden medical recovery after being taken off the breathing machine, medical expert Dr. Joel Zivot, an anesthesiologist advising her defense team, stated: “She’s breathing on her own, I think she’s on some supplemental oxygen, but not what she required initially.”
Explaining her current mental state and memory of the event, Dr. Zivot added: “She’s talking, she apparently knows at least who she is, and now knows where she is. She does not have any memory of the execution itself, but does have some memory of at least being a patient in the hospital on a ventilator.”
Lawyers representing the prisoner revealed that when she first opened her eyes after waking up from her long unconsciousness, her very first questions were: “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”.
Her lead attorney, Randy Spivey, explained to reporters that she is currently confused and angry about the whole painful experience, especially because prison officers still keep her handcuffed to her hospital bed despite her severe injuries and swollen arms.
Commenting on her difficult medical journey and condition, her legal team stated: “Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery.”
Attorney Randy Spivey further noted: “There’s still a lot of cognitive confusion, and so I will say that she has wanted to know what’s happened, and she’s asked about several people. She’s asked about her team. She’s asked about the victim’s family… I think she is angry and confused about everything right now.”
Christa Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for taking part in the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, Tennessee, a terrible crime where the victim was tortured and struck with an asphalt block.
Pike has spent three decades in isolation on death row and is believed to be the only person in modern American history to survive a completed lethal injection execution attempt.
The botched execution has forced Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to suspend all state executions while an independent investigation takes place.
Meanwhile, Pike’s legal team has filed court papers asking judges to stop the state from ever trying to execute her again.
