Four people have been confirmed dead following a fatal collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. around the Straight Gate School area in Ipara Remo, Ogun State. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the incident involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter and an ash-colored HOWO truck traveling along the busy corridor.
Preliminary investigations point to a deadly combination of speeding, wrongful overtaking, and driver fatigue. Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, explained that the Mitsubishi driver, reportedly traveling at high speed and battling exhaustion, rammed into the moving truck while attempting an unsafe overtake.
“A total of eight persons were involved in the crash,” Odunsi stated in a report released on Wednesday. “Four male adults were killed, while one sustained injuries and three others were unhurt.”
The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within six minutes of the initial 4:33 a.m. distress call. The sole injured victim was promptly rushed to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary in Ipara. The damaged vehicles have since been handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division in Isara for further investigation and necessary legal action.

In the wake of the tragedy, Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, issued a stern warning to motorists. He urged drivers to strictly avoid speeding, fatigue, and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys. He emphasized the critical need for adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and advised that overtaking should only be attempted when it is both safe and legally permissible.
As investigations continue, the mangled wreckage at Straight Gate serves as a grim testament to the fragility of life on Nigeria’s highways. For the families of the four victims, a routine morning commute has ended in irreversible grief, reinforcing the urgent, life-or-death need for stricter adherence to road safety protocols.
