Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe complains that movie producers always cast him as an “Odogwu” character and asks for more diverse roles.
Popular Nigerian movie star Uzor Arukwe has raised his voice to complain about how film producers in the country’s movie industry keep giving him the same kind of character over and over again.
The talented actor stated that movie makers always want him to play wealthy, loud, and proud Igbo men, a character style popularly known across social media and cinemas as the “Odogwu” role.
He made his feelings known while speaking during a podcast interview, explaining that he wants movie producers to trust him with different kinds of characters so he can show his true acting talent.
The actor became famous for playing this specific kind of rich and romantic character after appearing in several successful movies, including viral online films where his energetic performances won the hearts of many fans.
Because those movies brought huge attention and made a lot of money, movie producers started believing that casting him in similar roles is the safest way to make sure their films sell out and bring back good profit.
However, the constant repetition has started frustrating the actor, who believes that keeping him in one single category limits his growth as a professional artist.
Speaking openly about his frustration during the interview session, Uzor Arukwe said:
“All the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with Odogwu character. You can’t put me in a box.”
He explained further that filmmakers keep asking him to repeat the same character because they are afraid of losing money and believe that using a familiar formula is a sure way to guarantee financial returns on their investments.

He pointed out that just as someone took a chance on him to play that specific role in the past, producers should also be brave enough to create new kinds of characters and give other actors or himself the chance to try them out.
This issue also drew reactions from fans online. Earlier, a social media user on X (formerly Twitter) named R. Ekpedeme complained about seeing the actor shout too much in his frequent Igbo language roles.
Reacting to the fan’s complaint, the actor’s manager, Mautin Tairu, who is widely known as Mr M, agreed that a break is necessary.
He noted that while business choices and viewer demands on online streaming platforms often force producers to make certain decisions, the actor himself is more than ready to take on fresh challenges.
Movie fans across social media remain divided on the matter. Some viewers agreed that the actor is too talented to be playing the same role in every film, while others joked that viewers will still rush to watch any movie where he plays the rich boss.
Despite the debates, Uzor Arukwe hopes that directors will listen to his call and offer him more varied scripts in upcoming film projects.
