A priceless piece of Spain’s ancient history has been hit by a remarkably quick robbery. Thieves triggered a distraction, entered the Villena Museum, and were gone in about four minutes, taking gold jewellery and other Bronze Age treasures with them.
The robbery happened in the early hours of Friday morning at the museum in Villena, in Spain’s Alicante province, where one of Europe’s most important prehistoric gold collections is kept.
The target was the Treasure of Villena. Discovered in 1963 by an archaeologist in a dried-out riverbed, this collection holds nearly ten kilos of pure Bronze Age gold. It includes 29 bracelets, 11 bowls, and three bottles dating back to 1,000 BC. For decades, it has been the crown jewel of the local museum.
Or at least, it was.
According to local reports, the operation was anything but amateur. Around 5:15 a.m., alarms blared at a nearby sports center, pulling police resources away from the historic district. Five minutes later, the museum’s own alarms triggered.
By the time officers arrived, the thieves were already gone. The entire sweep took just four minutes.
A spokesman for the Villena town council described the raid as “super fast and super professional.” Officials also insisted there was no security failure, noting that all systems activated exactly as designed.
But protocols do not replace priceless artifacts.

Mayor Fulgencio Cerdán confirmed the community’s worst fears. The thieves didn’t just grab a few stray pieces. They targeted the absolute core of the collection.
“They’ve taken most of the treasure,” Cerdán told local media, specifying that the gold items were the primary target. “The town is devastated. I’m even trembling. The truth is that for those of us from Villena, this destroys us. It’s part of our heritage, of our wealth.”
Police are still assessing the exact scale of the loss, and investigations are ongoing.
For now, the display cases sit empty, and a quiet, angry shock has settled over the town. The gold may eventually surface on the black market, but the rupture in the town’s history is already permanent.
