ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard passed away at age 77 at his Texas home after suffering ongoing health issues.
Frank Beard, the famous drummer for the world renowned American rock group ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77.
The sad news was confirmed on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, after the legendary musician passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, at his ranch home in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his close family.
Beard had been receiving special medical attention in hospice care following a long fight with health challenges that forced him to step away from recent music tours.
Beard was a core member of the rock trio for more than fifty years, helping create famous hit songs like “La Grange,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs”.
Funny enough, while his two bandmates were world famous for wearing long, bushy beards, Frank Beard was actually the only member of ZZ Top without a long beard.
His steady, powerful drumming gave the group its unique sound that sold over fifty million records around the globe and earned them a spot in the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Leading the emotional tributes, ZZ Top lead singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons shared his deep grief over losing his lifelong partner on stage.

Remembering his late friend, Billy Gibbons stated, “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas”.
Gibbons went on to explain how important Beard was to the group’s success, adding, “His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top. The band of which he was part for six decades is going to keep on keeping on as he had wished”.
Other major global news outlets, including The Guardian and Associated Press, reported that ZZ Top immediately postponed their scheduled concert performances this week to honor their departed drummer.
His passing comes five years after the group lost their longtime bass player, Dusty Hill, who died in 2021. Despite the heartbreak, the remaining members promised fans that they will continue performing across the world just as Frank Beard wanted.
