Rabiu Kwankwaso condemned the violent blockade on Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State and asked police to arrest the attackers immediately.
Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress vice presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has strongly condemned a violent road attack against the convoy of his party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The dangerous incident happened on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway near the Air Force Base in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to eyewitness statements and official police updates, a large group of angry youths blocked the major highway, throwing objects and attempting to prevent Peter Obi and his team from entering local towns.
The former Anambra State governor was traveling through the state capital toward Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to pay condolence visits to community members suffering from recent violent attacks.
The primary reason why the political leader spoke out so strongly is that using hired thugs to stop opposition leaders from moving around violates the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
Under Nigerian law, every citizen has the clear right to move freely through all 36 states without fear of violence or illegal roadblocks.
Kwankwaso warned that allowing state governments to send violent crowds against visiting political leaders destroys democracy and creates dangerous political tension.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to warn state governors against anti democratic acts while appealing to international observers to monitor security threats against opposition figures.
Demanding quick police action, Rabiu Kwankwaso called on security forces to catch every person involved in the road blockade.
Expressing deep sadness over the political disruption in Makurdi, the former Kano governor decried the bad behavior of the attackers.
Showing how bad the situation was, Rabiu Kwankwaso stated: “I am deeply disturbed by the attack on the convoy of our presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as he travelled to Benue State”.
Calling out the dangerous strategy used by political enemies to block opposition leaders, the politician emphasized that lawlessness must end.
Highlighting the damage done to peaceful governance, he added that “the deliberate mobilisation of unruly elements to block and attack his convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi marks another dark day for our democracy”.
The Benue State Police Command has launched an active investigation to identify the youths involved in the road blockade.
