The Obidient Movement accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of using thugs to block Peter Obi’s convoy from entering Makurdi on Tuesday.
The Obidient Movement has launched a strong attack against the Governor of Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, accusing his administration of sponsoring political thugs to block and disrupt the convoy of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The dangerous incident happened on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, along the busy Gboko Road near the Air Force Base in Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State.
According to eyewitnesses and members of the political support group, large groups of violent youths carrying crude weapons blocked the main highway, set up road barricades, and prevented Peter Obi and his team from entering local communities.
The former governor of Anambra State was traveling to Makurdi and surrounding areas to pay condolence visits to local communities affected by security attacks and offer humanitarian support to displaced families.
The main reason why the political support group is raising alarm is that this marks the second time political leaders in Benue State are using state machinery to stop Peter Obi from freely moving around to help suffering citizens.
Under Nigerian constitutional law, every citizen has the fundamental right to move freely across any state in the federation without needing approval from sitting governors or political parties.
Members of the Obidient Movement stated that Governor Alia is playing dangerous politics with human lives by using political intimidation against visiting leaders who come to show care to vulnerable residents.
They warned that using hired thugs to attack political opponents sets a bad example for democracy and threatens peace in the entire North Central region.
The support movement urged security agencies to investigate the attackers and protect citizens from political violence.

Expressing deep anger over the road attack in Makurdi, spokespersons for the Obidient Movement condemned the governor’s actions.
Calling out the state leadership over the road blockade, political group members stated that “alleged sponsored thugs have blocked Gboko Road by the Air Force Base, attempting to prevent Peter Obi from gaining entry to perform his humanitarian duties”.
Warning that political opposition should not be treated like a crime, group leaders demanded immediate safety guarantees for visiting figures.
Condemning the act of stopping sympathy visits to troubled communities, Peter Obi himself expressed sadness, noting that “Governor Alia’s senseless thugs stopped me from paying a condolence visit to the Benue community”. State officials denied sponsoring the blockade, claiming the governor was not informed of any visit.
