Obidient Coordinator Tanko Releases Peter Obi’s 2014 Handover Note Showing N86.7 Billion Net Balance

Yunusa Tanko published Peter Obi’s 2014 handover note showing N86.7 billion left in state accounts, disproving state debt claims.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has published official copies of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s 2014 handover report, revealing that the administration left behind a total net balance of N8.7 billion.

Tanko released the certified financial document on his official social media page on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

The official paper, dated March 17, 2014, was originally sent by Peter Obi to his successor, former Governor Willie Obiano, to present a clear breakdown of all money, bank savings, and local and foreign investments owned by the state government at the close of business on Friday, March 14, 2014.

The main reason why the political coordinator decided to release the secret government paper to the public right now is to settle a major political disagreement between Peter Obi and the current Anambra State Government led by Governor Charles Soludo.

State officials, led by Information Commissioner Law Mefor, recently claimed that the present government is still paying off heavy foreign loans and financial debts inherited from past administrations, including those incurred during Peter Obi’s time in office.

To defend Peter Obi’s record of good money management, Tanko published the handover summary to prove that Peter Obi left zero debt and actually handed over huge cash savings to the next government.

Challenging other past and present state leaders to show their own financial records to the public, Yunusa Tanko spoke out strongly.

Demanding that leaders show transparency to citizens, Yunusa Tanko said, “Let other governors, from 1999 till date, have the courage to publish their handover notes to their successors, as Peter Obi has done. Be accountable to the people”.

Quoting directly from the original covering letter sent by Peter Obi to Willie Obiano in 2014, the official document reads, As Friday 14 March, 2014 was the final working day of my Administration, I also forward herewith the summary of the full financial statement of Anambra State (copies of which are herein attached) as at close of business on that day“.

Showing the breakdown of the state’s wealth at the time, the official document listed N27 billion Naira in local investments, N26.5 billion in foreign dollar investments, N28.17 billion in certified bank cash, and N10 billion in Federal Government refunds, leaving a total net balance of N86,665,985,574.06 after taking away all minor debts.

The published handover note has sparked big debates across political circles in the state. While supporters of the state government argue that long term foreign projects carry ongoing payments, economic analysts note that publishing signed handover papers helps citizens see facts about how public money is managed.
