Los Angeles prosecutors have announced they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents, acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated the decision followed a “rigorous review” and careful consideration of the wishes of the victims’ surviving family members. “We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings, and they made their views very clear,” Hochman told reporters ahead of a pretrial hearing on Wednesday.
As a result of this decision, the maximum punishment the 33-year-old will face, if convicted, is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community and beyond. Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home last year. Their bodies were discovered by their daughter, Romy, on December 14. The LA County medical examiner determined that the couple died from “multiple sharp force injuries.”

Prosecutors allege that Nick Reiner, the couple’s youngest son, fatally stabbed his parents inside a bedroom of their home before fleeing the scene. He was arrested in Los Angeles on the same day. He currently faces two counts of first-degree murder, alongside a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Looking ahead, Hochman confirmed that the highly anticipated trial will not begin until next year. The delay will allow both the prosecution and defense additional time to prepare for a complex and deeply scrutinized case, as the legal system moves forward in the shadow of a profound family tragedy.
