President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on imports from any country that introduces a digital services tax targeting American technology companies, opening a new front in the administration’s trade strategy.
In a post on social media on Friday, Trump said several European countries were moving closer to introducing taxes on large US digital companies and warned that Washington would respond immediately if those plans went ahead.
“Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
He also said the proposed tariff would override any existing or future trade agreements between the United States and the countries involved, signalling that no previous deal would shield them from retaliation.
The warning comes just days after French President Emmanuel Macron insisted France would not abandon its digital services tax despite pressure from Washington.
Speaking ahead of the G7 summit last week, Macron said France would not “bow to pressure” over the levy, which mainly affects large multinational technology companies such as Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon.
Digital services taxes have become a source of tension between the United States and several European governments.
Supporters argue that the taxes ensure multinational technology companies pay a fair share in countries where they generate significant revenue. Washington, however, has long argued that such measures unfairly single out American firms because many of the world’s biggest digital platforms are based in the US.
Trump’s latest warning suggests the administration is prepared to use tariffs as leverage once again.
Earlier this month, he warned France that the United States would consider imposing 100% tariffs on French wine unless Paris dropped its digital tax. Friday’s statement expands that threat beyond France to any country that adopts similar measures.
Trade experts say the announcement could increase uncertainty for countries still negotiating commercial agreements with Washington. Several European governments have either introduced digital services taxes or are considering them as they look for new ways to tax large technology companies operating across borders.
For now, no new tariffs have been imposed.
But Trump’s message leaves little doubt about his position. If governments move ahead with digital services taxes aimed at US technology companies, he says they should expect a swift and severe response from the United States.
