President Donald Trump waved the green flag to officially start the historic Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race in Washington.
United States President Donald Trump took center stage in the nation’s capital to wave the green starting flag for a high-speed IndyCar race through the city streets.
The sports spectacle, called the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, took place on Sunday, August 23, 2026, across the heart of downtown Washington, DC.
Fast race cars zoomed down famous public avenues near the White House and major monuments at speeds close to two hundred miles per hour, while thousands of spectators lined the road track to watch the event live.
The main reason for holding the car race in the middle of Washington is that President Trump wanted a huge, exciting event to mark the two hundred and fiftieth birthday celebration of the United States.
Supported by his long-time friend and IndyCar series owner Roger Penske, the president signed executive orders earlier in the year to turn busy public roads into a real racing track.
City workers had to do major work, like welding over two hundred metal manhole covers shut so the powerful racing cars would not accidentally pull them up off the street while driving past.
Before waving the flag to start the main competition, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump drove around the track inside the heavily armored presidential limousine, known as “The Beast,” while military jets flew over the city.

Expressing his big excitement about bringing high-speed motor sports directly to the capital city, President Donald Trump praised the power of the vehicles.
Talking about the sound of the engines, Donald Trump said that “their beautiful cars are going to make freedom roar” and added that “this will be a freedom that’s roaring like never before”.
Explaining how fast he approved the idea when meeting with race organizers, Donald Trump also noted that “when he came to see Trump it got done in about 15 minutes and it’s turned out to be much bigger than we ever even thought possible”.
Additional reports note that the Penske organization paid for most of the racetrack setup and road improvements. While many racing fans cheered the exciting show, some local leaders voiced worry about heavy traffic delays and the high cost of extra security across the city center.
In plain and simple terms, President Trump helped turn the main streets of Washington into a racetrack for a day. He rode around the track in his official car, waved a green flag to start the race, and watched fast cars drive through the city to celebrate America’s big birthday.
