12th June Is Nigeria’s Greatest Democratic Milestone – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described June 12 as the most important milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, saying the date continues to symbolize the resilience and determination of Nigerians who fought for democracy.

In a Democracy Day message released on Thursday, the opposition party said June 12 is more than a date on the calendar.

According to the ADC, it remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by citizens, activists, and pro-democracy groups in the struggle to restore democratic rule in the country.

The party noted that the June 12, 1993 presidential election remains one of the most significant events in Nigeria’s political history.

The election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest ever conducted in the country, was won by the late Chief MKO Abiola but was later annulled by the military government, sparking nationwide protests and years of political unrest.

ADC said the courage shown by Nigerians during that period helped lay the foundation for the democracy the country enjoys today.

“June 12 stands as a symbol of the people’s commitment to justice, freedom, and democratic governance,” the party stated.

The opposition party also urged political leaders to remain faithful to democratic principles by promoting accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law.

According to the ADC, the true meaning of June 12 goes beyond annual celebrations. It is a call for leaders to put the interests of citizens first and ensure that democratic institutions remain strong and independent.

The party further encouraged Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process and continue holding elected officials accountable.

As the nation marks Democracy Day, ADC said the lessons of June 12 should serve as a guide for building a more inclusive, transparent, and prosperous Nigeria.
