Residents of Yakasai Quarters in Kano Municipal Local Government Area were thrown into panic after suspected gunmen attacked the community in the middle of the night, leaving three people dead and several others injured.
According to reports gathered by Daily Post Nigeria, the incident happened late Thursday night when armed men invaded a residential area and began attacking residents. Witnesses said the attackers stormed a house, assaulted occupants, and forcefully collected mobile phones and other valuables before attempting to flee the area.
Suspected Gunmen Attack Kano Community at Night
However, the situation later turned violent after one of the suspected robbers was reportedly captured by angry youths in the community. Residents said the armed gang later returned to rescue their colleague, leading to a confrontation between the criminals and local youths who tried to defend the neighborhood.
During the clash, gunshots were fired repeatedly, creating fear across the area as residents ran for safety. Three youths who reportedly confronted the attackers were shot during the exchange.
Residents Attempt to Defend Neighborhood
One resident, identified as Naseer Abdussamad, described the incident as terrifying. He explained that what initially appeared to be a robbery operation later escalated into a deadly battle between the attackers and residents trying to protect their community.
According to him, the gunmen first attacked members of the household, harassed women inside the building, and physically assaulted some men before stealing mobile phones. He added that the situation became worse after one of the suspects was apprehended by local youths.
Witness Describe Terrifying Scene
Abdussamad stated that the attackers later returned in an attempt to free the captured gang member, but some courageous youths in the area resisted them. The confrontation eventually resulted in the shooting of three people.
Residents praised the bravery of the youths who responded quickly during the attack, saying their actions helped prevent further destruction and possible loss of lives in the community.
Calls for Stronger Community Security
Another resident, Salisu A. Kankarofi, called on neighboring communities to strengthen local security efforts in order to stop future attacks. He urged residents of surrounding areas including Yarmagaji, Dogarai, Mahauta, Jalli, and Kankarofi to work together in protecting their neighborhoods.
He also suggested the installation of security gates at major entry points within the communities, noting that such measures could help reduce the movement of criminals at night.
Fear Grows Over Rising Insecurity in Kano
The attack has once again raised concerns over the growing insecurity affecting several parts of northern Nigeria. Many residents expressed fear over the increasing cases of armed robbery and violent attacks occurring in communities, especially during late hours.
As of the time this report was filed, security agencies had not released an official statement regarding the incident. It also remains unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
Meanwhile, the injured victims were reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.
