ADC Puts Herman Hembe’s Governorship Ticket on Hold, Reviews Benue Primary

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended the issuance of a certificate of return to its Benue State governorship candidate, Herman Hembe, after announcing a review of the primary election that produced him as the party’s flag bearer.

The development comes weeks after the primary election and has introduced fresh uncertainty into the party’s preparations for the 2027 governorship race in the state.

Party Orders Review of Primary Election

ADC leaders said the decision followed concerns raised by stakeholders over the conduct of the governorship primary.

While the party has not cancelled the election, it explained that the review is intended to examine complaints and ensure that the process complied with the party’s rules and democratic principles.

The move signals the party’s determination to address internal grievances before moving forward with its campaign plans ahead of the next general election.

Hembe’s Victory Faces Fresh Test

Herman Hembe, a former member of the House of Representatives, emerged as the winner of the primary election and was expected to receive his certificate of return shortly after the exercise.

However, the latest decision means his candidacy remains under review pending the outcome of the party’s investigation.

Although ADC officials have not suggested that Hembe’s victory has been overturned, the withholding of the certificate indicates that the leadership wants all issues surrounding the exercise resolved before taking the next step.

Political observers believe the review could play a significant role in determining how united the party remains as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

Why the Certificate Was Withheld

According to party officials, the decision should not be interpreted as a rejection of the primary result.

Instead, they insist it is part of efforts to protect the credibility of the party’s internal processes.

The ADC said it wants to ensure that every complaint is thoroughly examined and that all stakeholders have confidence in the outcome.
Party leaders also stressed the importance of transparency, noting that addressing concerns now could prevent bigger disputes in the future.

What Happens Next?

Attention is now focused on the outcome of the review panel and any recommendations it may make.

If the party is satisfied with its findings, Hembe could still receive his certificate of return and continue as the ADC’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

However, if significant irregularities are discovered, the review could lead to further actions by the party leadership.

For now, ADC members and supporters in Benue State are waiting for the final verdict as the party seeks to balance internal unity with a commitment to a credible nomination process.
