Aisha Yesufu Clears Air On Loyalty To Peter Obi Ahead Of 2027 Talks

Human rights activist and outspoken political commentator Aisha Yesufu has explained the kind of relationship she shares with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying many people have misunderstood her support for him.

Speaking during a recent interview, Yesufu said Peter Obi is not her political godfather, but someone she regards as a “principal” because of the values and leadership style he represents to her.

According to her, supporting Obi does not mean she worships him or would refuse to criticize him when necessary.

She stressed that Nigerians often confuse political support with blind loyalty, adding that her involvement in Obi’s movement was driven by her belief in accountability, good governance and responsible leadership.

Yesufu noted that she has always spoken up against bad leadership regardless of who is involved and would continue to do so even with politicians she supports.

The activist also pointed out that the country’s political culture has made many people believe every politician must have loyal followers who defend them at all costs.

She, however, insisted that citizens should be able to support leaders based on competence and still demand transparency from them at the same time.

Her statement has generated conversations across social media, especially among supporters of Peter Obi and members of the Obidient Movement, with many people debating the difference between political loyalty and political accountability.

As discussions ahead of the 2027 elections continue to build, comments like this are already shaping conversations around the future of opposition politics and the expectations Nigerians now have from political leaders.
