The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Ogechi Ofoma, for allegedly subjecting her seven-year-old daughter to severe physical abuse, including burning her with a hot knife.
The disturbing incident occurred in the Ibollo community of Awada-Obosi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area. According to preliminary reports, the horrific assault was triggered by a minor accusation that the child, identified as Oluebube, had taken meat from a cooking pot.
The suspect was apprehended on Sunday following the swift intervention of local community security personnel and concerned residents, who rescued the child from further harm. She is currently in custody at the Awada Police Station pending a thorough investigation.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, praised the vigilance of the community. “The prompt intervention of security personnel from the Ibollo Community and concerned residents led to the child’s rescue and the arrest of her mother,” Ikenga stated. “Preliminary information indicates that the child was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife.”
In response to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, has initiated a collaborative effort with the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. This partnership aims to ensure that the young victim receives urgent medical care, psychological support, and comprehensive welfare protection.
The state government has also reacted with strong condemnation. The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, described the alleged act as “inhumane and a gross violation” of a child’s rights and dignity. Commending the police and the community for their rapid response, she warned that anyone found culpable of violating the rights of children will face the full, uncompromising weight of the law.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the silent epidemics of domestic violence that can unfold within the supposed safety of a home.
